Abdoulaye
Diabate is New York’s most accomplished representative
of an 800-year tradition of oral historians, storytellers and musicians
known as jalilu, or griots. Diabate and his band,
Super Manden, are
featured on Badenya, Manden Jaliya in New York City (2002
Smithsonian Folkways Recordings CD produced by CTMD).
The
Super Manden band combines kora; balafon, tambin,
guitar, bass and percussion for a danceable sound that packs the
city’s African parties. |
The
Kotchegna Dance Company, founded by Vado
Diomande in 1996, will recreate masked dances from
regions of the Ivory Coast including the acrobatic Gue-Pehlu
spirit stilt dance, of which Diomande is New York’s foremost
master dancer and choreographer. |
