Title: Der rebbe hot gevolt nokh eretz yisroel forn (The Rabbi Wanted to Travel to Israel)
Transcription: Miriam Isaacs
Translation: Miriam Isaacs

Information: Sung by Diana Blumenfeld. She called it a folkslid (folksong), that came from Warsaw Ghetto. This song is likely from the maskillic repertoire (relating to the 19th century Jewish haskalah/enlightenment movement) in its parodic portrayal of a wonder-working rebbe and his devout followers. Thus the line "they feel such a good feeling, that misnagdim (non-Hasidim, or 'opponents' of the Hasidic movement) never feel" oozes with irony, as this song is clearly written for a non-Hasidic audience.

1. Der rebe hot gevolt nokh eretz Yisroel forn, un keyn shifl iz nito.

Un az der rebe trakht, trakhtn di khasidim mit

1. The rebbe wanted to travel to the Land of Israel and there is no ship.
So the rebbe gives an order and he travels there in an hour.
And if he travels all his followers travel too
and they feel such a good feeling, that opponents (misnagdim) never feel.

2. The rebbe wanted to drink some booze, and there was no brandy.
So he gave an order and the deepest seas turned to brandy.
And when the rebbe drinks his Hasidim drink too
and with that they feel such a good taste that no opponent ever feels.

3. The rebbe wanted to eat kosher meat, and there was no kosher butcher.
So he gave an order to all the kosher birds and they were slaughtered in one hour.
And when the rebbe eats, all the Hasidim eat too
and they have such a taste that no opponent ever feels.

4. The rebbe wanted to have solitude, but there wasn't a place of study.
So they ordered all the empty forests, and in them there was a meditative mood in an hour.
And when the rebbe thinks, all the Hasidim think as well
and they have such a feeling, that no opponent ever feels.
